Cleves Time Trial

I rode solo again this evening at 5:30. My goal was to keep my power from spiking above 400, if possible. In the end my NP was lower than last week by about 10 watts but my time was only 3 seconds slower. Just shows that good pacing cam be pretty efficient. Here is a look at the power details my power last week vs this week for those short efforts within the ride with last week then this week's power shown: 5min at 362/348, 4 at 372/353, 3 at 393/364, 20 seconds at 6519/475, 30 seconds at 499/458...so I did keep power down somewhat

Century #14 for 2018

Only had 1.5 hours on the schedule today and again tomorrow but too nice of a day so I did the 105 mile ride.

another 20 minute time trial effort, inside

Pretty good effort, inside. I do think that on that bike, in a road position, no hills or wind to deal with, that I can account for the better power (357 av was) than on the time trial bike outside (340). There may be a slight difference in the power numbers calibration but even at 2% it would be in the upper 340's, so not too far off outside.

Cleves July 24

Nothing to spectacular here. Rode solo at 5:30 and did a 22:48 at 330 watts. I did hold 340+ for the first 5 and then kind of let off the accelerator for the second half. I think the big miles in Michigan and the two 20 minute efforts over the weekend causes some fatigue. Overall, a good ride.

20 minutes indoor time trial

Did this 20 minute effort this morning after taking yesterday off to drive back from MI. Average 355 watts. That higher than I do at Cleves for 23 minutes but also on a different bike (Stages SC3) and sitting in a typical road position which gives more leverage against the pedals. I should be able to be in the 340's at Cleves, just not always that motivated.

Two More Traverse City Routes

Books read over the last 16 day vacation

I used my Kindle and the audio app to both read and listen to these starting on the drive to Appleton through halfway home today. I actually started the last one in norther Ohio and am about 1/3 through it. All very good books and very different subject matters.

Michigan rides

In the last ten days I’ve done 9 rides for a total of 475 miles. Heading home tomorrow and will do two Cleves time trials, the Ohio state tometrial, make a trip to Tennessee and then back up to Michigan for their state 5 and 10 k and then back to Traverse city for 5 days. Love these big training blocks.

Michigan Ride, July 12

I threw in some random intervals just for fun. 13:30 (first two...7 seconds for a stop sign separates them) at 338, 30 seconds at 464, 572 and 524, 3 min at 375, 5 min at 325 and 5 min at 302. I used the road ahead to determine some of the times. Had some nice rollers, a few flat stretches and some short climbs.

Michigan Ride

Had a three hour ride on the schedule and this was completed in 3:05. Went from Boyne City to Charelvoix with maybe 1/3 of the ride on bike trail and the rest on the road. Not much traffic so that was fine. The section from Charlevoix to Petosky was all bike trail. Given the road it parallels, that is he only option. The trail itself was a little boring (lots of factory and business entryways, lots of highways traffic noise). Once in Petosky I could have continued around Little traverse Bay to Harbor Springs but opted not to given the rather slow nature of the trail: some families, older couples, runners, dog walkers, etc, most with earbuds and not paying attention. I headed inland and after on road that ended in sand and gravel finally found my route to Walloon Lake and then back to Boyne.

Isle Royale National Park

Had an amazing four day on Isle Royale National Park covering about 50 miles in four days. Trails hiked include Rock Harbor, Tobin Harbor, Still, Suzy's Cave, Moskey Basin, Mt. Franklin, Lookout Louise, Hidden Lake, Lane Cove, Daisy Farm, and Greenstone over a few sections. Also did some kayaking in Tobin Harbor.

Worth reading

I read and listened to this book this week. While I had read most of LeMond's race history it was interesting to read about his early years as a teenager on the bike, his relationship with his dad, how he was and wasn't accepted in Europe, etc.  The section on how Fignon and LeMond couldn't;t keep up with the PED enhanced peloton is an eye opener if your not familiar with that era. I have to think Indurain was juicing and I believe Lemond's accounts of his conversations with Armstrong. One of them ended up being the biggest liar in sports history. I've always said LeMond is the greatest cyclist, and maybe the greatest athlete, to come from the US. His VO2 of 90+ is off the charts. Armstrong's ranged from the upper 70's to low 80's. Good but not great. Heck, mine was 70 when I was 47.

Endurance miles prior to time off the bike

We've been putting in a lot of just endurance miles knowing that I'll be off the bike for about 5 days doing some hiking. I threw in some intervals today just for fun. I usually find that the time off the bike, which will include about 40-50 miles of hiking, is good this time of year. I've been doing about 1000 miles per month since January so a little non-bike time is ok. Plus, once back from the hiking trip I';ll be ramping up the miles in northern Michigan.
