Time Trial Season, so far

So we've had 7 time trials at Cleves and the state championship already this season. Oddly enough I rode my best time at Cleves so far this year on the second week when I snuck into the 21's at 21:58. My two slowest have been the last two weeks at 22:38. The second week was windy and I recall going by the powerplant, on the slight uphill, at 28 mph and holding over 30 for most of the flat sections covering the last few miles. Even the uphill finish was at 26+. The last two weeks have been almost windless and going off early at 5:30 does seem to put a few of us at the height of the daily heat. Last week was particulary brutal with very high humidity. That was as close as I've ever come to stopping on that course in several years. I finished but I felt horrible for 30 minutes after.

If you don't currently weigh yourself before and after your training rides and races, you may want to start to. I drank no fewer than 6 bottles from my arrival at Cleves at 4:00 pm to the time I left around 8:30. I was still down 6 lbs when I weighed myself! This is 3.5% of my 170 lb weight. That type of dehydration has a a huge effect on performance. I know it's taboo to carry water on the bike for a tt but my dietician is convincing me that the water loss is way more detrimental than the added weight. Power drops by over 10% when you're down that much. Might be time to start using the Camelback vest on the hot nights.

Pete-

This is a first for me to literally ever go on a blog and certainly to comment. You discussed having a time trial clinic for a group and I'm all for it. I think it would be great to discuss specific strategies for the varying distances. Would love for you to hold this prior to Nationals in August. I am happy to open my office to the group.

Peter, Boy what a coincidence that you talk about dehydration effects on performance over the last couple of weeks. This past Sunday when I raced the Colavita Race in Celina, OH it was about 85 degrees with a small breeze so it dod not feel really that bad, but during the race it got really hot out there. This was a 24.6 mile race and unfortunately about a mile into the race my Bontrager Aero bottle decided it wanted to seperate from the bike, so for about 24 miles I had nothing to drink. Well, about 30 minutes into the race my legs started cramping up (due to dehydration I think). Looking back on it I do not think I drank enough in the morning before the race, so this did not help either. Well, to make a long story short, I was averaging just over 27 mph for the first 30 minutes and then after my legs starting cramping my speed fell down to about 24mph. I think the camelback vest might be my next investment before my next 40Km race, that and drinking a ton of fluids before any race. As always, thanks for your insight... Glen

I have the camelback vest and it does work well. I don't think it hurts your aero-dynamics much if any. I did start drinking the Gatorade Pro 2, not the G2 that is in stores. The Pro has much higher sodium and it makes a big difference on the long rides. You can buy it through Performance or I found it at a GNC near us. I bought the powder and mix it myself. I went through about 60 ounces on a 100 mile ride last Saturday in the heat, along with about 140 ounces of G2, and felt pretty good. My dietician is convinced that I'm going through most of the season dehydrated. I weigh myself before and after rides and will lose 3-7 lbs in 1.5 to 5 hours, and thats not good. The goal is to come back weighing close to what I started the ride at. You can't pass up any stores if you want to keep that hydrated, or you need huge camelback.

I will schedule a clinic. I have some interest. I'll keep everyone posted.

Felt better at tonights time trial. Actually rode what felt like a more relaxed pace, and rode faster than the last three weeks. No wind, hot but not scorching or as humid as last week. I'm riding fast times but they just seem very dissatisfying. Hopefully that means there are some faster times in the future. I'm convinced I am riding as hard going off earlier (and then helping with the riders at 7:00) and essentially riding most of the course alone after I catch John and Alan. I think my efforts have been on par with anything I've done in the past. I'm not sure if we've had the fastest nights, yet.
